-ison
suffix of ns., repr. OF. -aison, -eison, -eson, -ison:—L. -ātiōn-em (at a later date adopted in the learned form -ation, which is thus a doublet of -ison), -etiōnem, -itiōnem. Examples comparison, fermison, garrison, jettison, orison, venison, warnison.
Benison and malison represent OF. beneīccedon (later benisson) and maleïccedon, from L. bene-, maledictionem. Caparison is only attracted into this class. In reason and season, the suffix has, under the stress, retained a different form; so in treason:—OF. traïsun:—L. tradition-em. See also inheriteson. All these, with poison (:—L. pōtiōnem), etc., are really particular cases of a suffix -son for L. -tiōnem.
